Choctaw Tribe Pioneers Tribal Sports Betting In Mississippi
The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians have crossed a new frontier, becoming the first tribal gaming operators outside of Nevada to offer sports betting post-PASPA.
The state of Mississippi repealed the language from its laws that prohibited sports gambling a year prior to the Supreme Court ruling, which is why operators around the state were ready to launch sports betting shortly after the ban was lifted.
“We’re very excited to be one of the very first tribal gaming facilities to offer traditional sports wagering,” stated Phyliss J Anderson, tribal chief of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. “Our guests can now bet on all professional league sports and major collegiate sporting events on our property.”
Choctaw Partners With IGT
Keeping up the same momentum, the Tribe has now partnered with global gaming provider International Game Technology (IGT) to further enhance the overall sports betting experience for patrons.
"IGT's leading entry into the tribal gaming sports betting space demonstrates how a wide variety of casino operators can benefit from our flexible, market-ready PlayShot sports betting solution, today," stated Enrico Drago, IGT Senior Vice President.
The PlayShot technology provided by IGT will allow patrons to place pre-match and in-game wagers when visiting any of the three Choctaw-owned casino sportsbooks in Mississippi. The deal will also add IGT kiosks and limited mobile products in the future.
IGT currently provides the same product to more than 15 other casinos around the U.S. The Mississippi locations where PlayShot will be utilized include:
Pearl River Resorts' Golden Moon Hotel & Casino in Pearl River, MS
Silver Star Hotel & Casino in Choctaw, MS.,
Bok Homa Casino in Sandersville, MS
What’s In Store For Mississippi Sports Betting
Mississippi was well prepared when it came to legalizing sports betting, but it seems to be behind when it comes to certain regulatory aspects.
The current Mississippi sports betting law only permits limited mobile wagering, with all mobile sports bets required to take place on the casino property. The absence of mobile capabilities will undoubtedly keep a large portion of sports bettors using offshore sites like Bovada for the added convenience and flexibility.
Operators and sports enthusiasts are hoping that this law will be amended in the future, with IGT expressing in a statement that mobile solutions may be later introduced in their Choctaw partnership.
On the upside, Mississippi sports betting will likely continue to expand throughout the year. Right now, there are 11 sportsbooks spread out across the state. Any existing gaming operator can apply for an MS sports betting license, which means there could be more than 30 sportsbooks in Mississippi when its all said and done.
